Update

Many of you who stop by here already know this, but for those of you who don't, I may be a bit longer away than originally planned. Not quite sure yet. On the day after Christmas my mom and her husband were out walking the dogs on my sister and brother-in-law's land when my mom stepped on a sheet of ice and fell.

It might not have been so bad, but there was something wrong with her femur--they're not sure what just yet, but they suspect it's a bone cyst--and she has three breaks in her thigh. For the past few days she's been mostly immobilized in the hospital waiting for surgery because this is a very dangerous break--lots of sharp stuff near potentially bleedy stuff.

I'm in Des Moines with her, I'm supposed to go home tomorrow morning. We'll see.

That's what's going on.

Side note

Okay, here's the thing: I'm leaving tomorrow...on a jet plane, as it happens. (Pray for me and for all the strangers around me who'll have to cope with my phobia). What that means is that I may not be posting much in the next couple of weeks. I'll try, oh, yes, I'll try! But there is no do, only try.

Check back periodically. If I can figure it out on strange computers, I'll post! If not, I'll see you back here on the 4th with a backlog of many pictures. My Christmas present to you.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a joyous New Year!

Day 240

Holly brought me presents this morning! One birthday, one Christmas, and one picture for my blog since I didn't have one today. :) Thanks, Holly!

She got me some fabulously fragrant loose teas from a spice shop here in town.

What makes that birthday tea, you ask?

Sprinkles!

Awesome.

Day 239

No significance here. I just love this shot. :)

Day 238

Today I went and picked out new glasses. I don't really want new glasses, you understand. However, mine are five or six years old. My prescription hasn't changed, but as you can see, the metal is not just flaking off, it's coming off in layers.

Also, I had lots of money left in my flex account to use or lose by the end of the year. New glasses it is!

I tried on probably 30 pair of frames. I wouldn't have tried on so many--probably--but the nice lady there kept handing another to me when I didn't seem completely sold on any given pair. And I wanted to tell her, "Please, just let me browse on my own; this will be far simpler." But she was trying so hard!

I did narrow it down, took pictures of me wearing the four I was left with, and narrowed it down further to two. And realized one was a pair of Coach frames and one was by Valentino. Oy. I have expensive taste and I wasn't even trying! This happens a lot, mind you. My tastes far outstrip my spending ability.

Mom, you'll be happy to know I did NOT get the most expensive pair. I got the pair that was $10 cheaper. *grin* (And I would have gotten them anyway).

Come the beginning of the new year, I'll have Valentino's riding around on the bridge of my nose. And these long-time friends will be put away.

So long, old frames. I'll miss you.

Day 237

One of my favorite pictures from the very first time I ever went to Pickerell Lake is of this long-dead tree. That was on a summer day probably ten years ago.

It's no longer summer.

It's still there, tall and stark and completely inexplicably standing stalwart off the dock. And it's absolutely beautiful in its silvery simplicity.

Let's see if I can get a better shot--one where the light hits it.

Ahhhh, yes, that's better. Seriously gorgeous!

Day 236

This is, for the most part, a filler picture. I fully admit it. But I also love the early morning light draped over the shot. And I love this giant, antique dictionary my Aunt Stella gave me many years ago. So I'm not all that disappointed that it's filler. I hope you're not, either.

Day 235

I can't remember the first time I saw White Christmas. I suspect it was at my Aunt Stella's house whilst eating ribbon candy under a Christmas tree decorated with tinsel and bubble lights. We had some very iconic Christmas gatherings there and I'd imagine that movie was part of it.

Whenever I watched it, I fell in love, I'm sure. More than that, it formed a deep, abiding foundation for my fashion sensibilities. Specifically, every single outfit Rosemary Clooney wore buried themselves deep into my impressionable psyche.

Last night I made my (second of the week) annual pilgrimage to see the movie on the big screen and decided I would share this fashion with you. Of all the dresses she wears in the movie--and they are legion--this is by far the most fabulous.

It's just perfect (the dress, not the shot, clearly). You can't see it from this angle, but there's an enormous diamond brooch pinned to the small of her back. It should look ridiculous and out of place and, very probably, a bit too bootylicious. But it doesn't. It looks sublime.

Another formative moment in the movie? The boy below. He appears in this single scene, he speaks not a word, and he has some of the goofiest choreography ever (not purposely funny, mind you). Honestly, this may be the only shot in which his face is really visible. I was instantly in love.

A few years ago I found I was not alone. This was George Chakiris's big break. Seems girls swamped the studio with letters begging to know who that boy was and wanting to see him in more. Now that's charisma!

Day 234

This is what my work windowsill looks like right now.

I love getting flowers at work! Well, flowers period, but especially at work. I spend most of my day there, after all.

One year when I worked at the newspaper, I got several arrangements from lots of people. They just kept coming all day. It was wonderful.

I don't get flowers a lot. Not having a significant other will do that. And that's okay. Because when I do get them, how much more special are they?

My mom knows this. She knows all of this. This year, she and Don surprised me. After all, I'm going to see them in about a week. I just figured I'd get any birthday presents then.

And then these came. Bright and cheery and perfect for a cold winter's day.

Thanks, Mom! I love you, too. :)

Day 233

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

I'm a complete dork about my birthday. I love it. I've always loved it and I don't see that ever, ever changing. I'm going to be 73 and all, "WOOT! It's mah birfday!!!" But I've been trying not to talk about it on here because once I start, I can't always stop. *grin*

In honor of this day of awesomeness, I'm posting a rare picture of me on the interwebs:

Hi! Can you see me waving?

On Monday, I got my first birthday present. My best friend sent me the second album from "A Fine Frenzy." I squee'd rather a lot when I opened it. I've been dying to have this and it's only because I put it on my wishlist that I haven't already bought it for myself.

Thanks, Amila!

YAY!!!!

I Heart Faces Pet Week #2

It's Pet Week over at I Heart Faces and I had to enter this picture. It's one of my favorite portraits of Hamlet--I got exactly what I wanted in this shot: his nose leather and fur surrounding are in perfect focus and his eyes are blurred out. I'm biased, I know, but isn't he just so handsome? (Click on the picture to make it bigger and get the full effect).

Go to iheartfaces.com for more great pet face entries! Or just click here

Day 232

Things look different in the winter. Would you like an example for that extremely obvious statement? Great!

Do you remember these from earlier in the blog? (Do you remember the eye?)

This is what they look like as of Saturday.

See? Different.

Day 231

The sun shone all day Saturday. And I couldn't stand not to be out in it. So I drove out to Pickerel Lake and went for a tromp.

How do I forget how much I love being out in snow until I'm actually surrounded by it? Despite my natural inclination to childlike wonder (and yeah, okay, childishness, but that's a different topic), sometimes I still fall into the trap of being wooed by the cozy warmth of the indoors and grumble that there are so many things I can't do when there's snow on the ground. But that never stopped me when I was a kid. Heck, it didn't stop me in college. Just bundle up and head outside! I'm so glad I broke out the long johns and extra gloves and ventured into the great outdoors. It was more than worth it.

But do you know who shovels Pickerel? No one, that's who! Which made it interesting in a couple of places. Like the dock that crosses the lake.

They leave the trail snow-covered because, as you can see from the shot above, cross-country skiers love it. And I did find myself remembering how much I enjoyed cross-country the two or three times I got the chance to try it. Maybe I should have put skis (skies? Skiis?) on my wishlist this year! Or snowshoes.

Speaking of, see the tracks on the trail below? Those oval-ended ones coming toward you? Snowshoes!!

Oh, I do love winter!

Day 230

On Saturday, I woke up to a frostily beautiful world outside my window. And on it, as well. :)

Oh, be still, my heart!

Day 229

On Friday, the sun came out.

Friday, December 11, 2009

Day 228

You may have heard that it's been snowing in these parts. Blizzard of '09 and all that.

I took yesterday afternoon off and enjoyed it muchly. (And wished to make snow cream, but that's neither here nor there).

When I left for work Thursday morning, my balcony had a light dusting of snow--maybe half an inch or so. When I came home at 12:30, my planter turtle looked like this:

BuddhaGator was enduring a fancy new snow chapeau and scarf with graceful aplomb.

I turned around to go back inside and saw the sun. The SUN! So I took a picture. It went away about thirty seconds later and I haven't seen it since.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Day 227

I emerged from my bedroom on Wednesday morning to be greeted by this:

It was so typically catty I had to laugh. I don't know what happened; I'm guessing it fell out of the cubby next to the couch where I keep it for tissues and startled Hamlet. He's never even been interested in tp before, but this was just destroyed! I wish I knew what he was thinking.

Day 226

We always have our company Christmas party during Sales Conference so that the sales reps who live out of state can join in the festivities. Last night was the party combined with a retirement farewell for one of our reps.

There were nibbles and drinks.

A live jazz band played (The Theophonic Four--I don't know if that's their real moniker. The owner of the company calls them that, but that's actually more of an argument against that being what they call themselves than for).

This one is just because I like the accidental "Banket DRAMA!" this shot captures. I was trying to get a little flash in the shot to balance the color, but not enough to wash it out completely. And this happened. It makes me giggle.

And then I foolishly went on to writer's group because the roads were clear--and nearly got into at least five accidents, one that would have been extremely serious, on the way home. Good times.

That was my night! What'd you do?

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Day 225

It's sales conference time! Three days of sitting in a dimly lit room (which you'll see by my crappy picture below) discussing books we're soon to publish.

And playing Hangman and doodling and making paper airplanes and cootie-catchers and coloring. Note the giant mug of coffee in the upper right corner and the water to the left. Just out of frame are markers in a rainbow of colors and a half-eaten doughnut and three sleepy coworkers.

This is why I'm late posting. And why I'll be late again tomorrow, most likely.

Monday, December 7, 2009

Day 224

I call this "Baking: A Still Life."

Day 223

Behold! Ball of Tabitha!

I realize this isn't the greatest picture ever. It's not even good! Don't care. :)

Day 222

Friday was my turn at bat for our company coffee break. Every Friday morning we get together in the kitchen for treats and what I grew up calling "Fellowship," though I doubt anyone else here would refer to it in that sense. Not many Baptists round these parts.

I had great plans of baking a variety of sugar cookies. I even had a simple little recipe for the dough and several different ways to enchance it (cranberries and almonds, brown sugar, orange juice frosting, etc.). And then I realized it was Thursday. So I went out and bought cookies instead. And one of these.

Now, my biggest thing for coffee break is presentation. I'm a big believer that everything tastes better when it's set out in a pretty way. I don't go overboard (well, I don't always) but it's so simple to at least take things out of their box and arrange them on a plate. And voila! You instantly have something that's more appetizing. It's true! They've done studies!

So I brought my fancy glass and ceramic saucers from home and made little paper tents with each cookie variety written on it, commandeered use of the nearest poinsettia, and arranged things as symmetrically as possible. (I actually had to rearrange things from their perfect symmetry when I realized that I had only made one sign per type of cookie. The horror!) As a finishing touch, I pulled out a boombox (see it in the background below--next to the toaster oven?) and a cd of Christmas instrumentals.

These Swedish cookies were a big hit, followed by a tie between the Ginger-Lemon cremes and that swiss roll up there.

Now I just have to come up with something to bring for birthday treats next week. Maybe something *I* like, this time!

Day 221

Sitting at my desk, correcting files, I glance up. And what to my wondering eyes should appear? (Tip your head to the side, sorry).

SNOW!!!! Giant, fluffy flakes of it!

Which is when I squealed loudly and started to bounce in my chair, clapping my hands like a little kid. This was followed by laughter, both at myself, and from sheer happy joy.

I could not stop grinning.

This morning, I woke to several inches of snow on the ground. I drove into work a little early and went about 10-15 mph the whole way. And it's worth it.

Look, I know people say they don't like snow, and I believe some of you (Tom, I'm looking at you). But many times what it boils down to is that you hate driving in snow, right? I get that, I do. I need new tires for the car; believe me, I understand. However, I think that's really more an argument to return to the horse and sleigh idea. I'm wholeheartedly for that. Because when you take the whole "threat of death" out of the equation, it becomes a lot more difficult to hate snow. It's beautiful, especially when it first falls. It hushes the world, enveloping everything in its ermine embrace. It's enchanting and charming and just plain fun!

Pretend you're not an adult anymore, that you don't have to drive or shovel or all the other chores that make you hate snow. Pretend you're a kid again and snow means snow days and snowmen and sledding and catching flakes on your tongue and finding fourteen new designs of flake melting on just one mitten. Try to recapture the sheer wonder snow used to bring you.

This post is dedicated to Amy, who won't get snow this year. We have plenty to spare and I'll share it with you anytime.

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Day 220

Two or three weeks back I had to buy cat meds on Amazon. Oh, but I wanted that shiny free shipping deal that comes with a $25 purchase! I cannot resist its siren call. So I bought myself an early birthday present: a two-volume set of Folklore encylopedia.

My ways are not your ways, my friend.

Last night I spent much of the early evening reading through the second volume. I was trying to focus my unwieldy personal statement with some clear career goals and while I certainly did that, I also got sucked into several extraneous entries.

Sometimes I have niggling little doubts that I'm not going into the right field for me. Then I'll pick up a book like this and get thoroughly entranced; what's more, I get giddy. And I feel better.

Want to know the best part? Because they're mine-all-mine, I got to underline things!!! I drew stars in the margins! I made notes like, "Quote El-Shamy's observations on ego-involving in cultural transfer."

I'm going to be beyond bummed if this doesn't work out.

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Day 219

How much fun is gift-giving? Seriously. I love it. Ask any of my friends. I wish that I had the werewithal to buy for people whenever I see their perfect gift. It kills me when I don't have funds at Christmas or on birthdays.

The look on Cindy's face is what I'm always aiming for when I buy a present for someone. I love that I captured it on film...well, digital screen, but you know.

I wasn't left out, though. Cindy bought me this elegantly pretty necklace and earrings. I could NOT get a good shot of the set, but these will give you some idea.

I drooled over these a year ago. She secretly bought them for me that day and has been holding on to them for months.

She's pretty good at gift-giving herself.

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Day 218

I love details. In fact, I find them fascinating. The tiny little nuances that make things interesting.

For instance, the architectural design of a window railing or the condensation on the sill.

The way that light refracts in glass to paint rainbows.

The way that a tree or an entire building can be captured in the reflection of the stem of a goblet.

The little things that we don't always notice. Those things that we discover as children, process, and move past.

Today, look for new details in the familiar things and people around you. Discover the charm you may have forgotten.

And maybe look past the cheesy fortune cookieness of this post to see the sincerity within it. :)

Monday, November 30, 2009

Day 217

It's Monday and I'm back at work after a four-day vacation with people of whom I am quite fond.

Yep.

So Jason and Cindy--well, mostly Cindy--are big fans of Christmas decorations. Saturday night I went out and took pictures of their yard. As you look at the picture below, bear in mind that they're not done decorating yet. They really like to decorate. (Click on the pictures to enlarge them and get the full effect).

The other thing you should know is that Cindy loves elephants. This, of course, means that in addition to the traditional elements -- nativity scene, candy canes, wreaths, tree lights, etc. -- there are no fewer than three Christmas elephants in the yard.

And, just for a more wintery touch, there are penguins here and there, sledding around, having fun.

Wheeeee!
